Transgender and Gender Diverse People

We are an affirming service that can look after your sexual health needs.

We do not provide hormone therapy, though we are able to refer you on to affirming services who will be able to assist.

Please let us know when you book if your pronouns or name is different to what appears on your Medicare card or other identification.

If you’re not sure if you need a sexual health test, call the Sexual health Infolink (SHIL) on 1800 451 624.

General Practice (GP) or other testing options

Most STI and HIV testing in NSW is conducted through GPs. It’s a good idea for everyone who is sexually active to get a regular check-up. We recommend you see a GP for this.

Click here for a referral letter you can take to your GP. Or explore other testing options.

If you want help in finding a local doctor or you would like further information, talk to sexual health nurse at the NSW Sexual Health Infolink on 1800 451 624.

Dried Blood Spot Testing (DBS)

A DBS test is a free, easy and accurate way to test for HIV and/or hepatitis C without having to come into the clinic.

The DBS test works by putting a few drops of blood from your finger on a test card and leaving to dry.

Check out the DBS website for detailed instructions and information on how to order.

FAQS

Have questions about seeing us if you are transgender or gender diverse? No worries, we’ve got answers!

Can I access gender affirming hormones at SSHC?

We are a sexual health service and do not specialise in hormonal therapies. We are here to support your sexual health. We will make referrals to specialists if required.

Do you require me to use the legal name on my Medicare card?

No. You do not need to use your legal name if you’d prefer not to. We will need to ensure that you use the same name and date of birth each time you come to see us so we can keep track of your medical history and provide you with the best care.

Does PrEP, PEP, or HIV treatment interfere with my hormone therapy?

It is important that you speak to your clinician about what medications you are taking. PrEP is just as safe and effective for people who are transgender or non binary as it is for cisgender people.

Do you offer counselling?

Yes, we have a team of counsellors, social workers, and psychologists who offer gender affirming counselling to help support you and your sexual health. If we are not the best service for your needs, we will refer you to other gender affirming services.

What resources are there to support me?

ACON’s Trans Hub is a useful resource for information or to find gender affirming doctors.

Where can I go for social support?

ACON provides workshops that are trans inclusive. If you are 25 or under and in the inner city of Sydney, you can contact Twenty10. For more information:
