Free PrEP for people without Medicare

What is PrEP?

Pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, is a medicine that helps prevent HIV. Taking PrEP can greatly lower your risk of getting HIV.

PrEP does not protect against other sexually transmissible infections (STIs). Using condoms and having STI tests are the best ways to protect yourself against STIs.

Who can get free PrEP?

You can get free PrEP if you:

    • do not have Medicare; and

    • are living in Australia for more than a short-term stay*; and

*This program is for people who consider Australia as the ‘usual place of living’, or who intend to live in Australia for a period of time.

This program is not for short-stay visitors to Australia or tourists.

Do I have to pay?

No. If you go to the sexual health clinics listed below to get your PrEP, you do not need to pay.

Our service will cover the cost of the PrEP medicine and all required tests.

Where to get free PrEP?

If you are already a client of a sexual health clinic in South Eastern Sydney Local Health District, you can get free PrEP from Sydney Sexual Health Centre, the Albion Centre, Kirketon Road Centre or Short Street Centre.

What if I cannot get free PrEP there?

You can still get PrEP in Australia.

If you have Medicare, you can get PrEP through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) at a lowered cost.
